Water and Sanitation Engineering Division
The Water and Sanitation Engineering Division (WSED) is responsible for ensuring that the people of Kiribati have sufficient access to reliable, safe water supplies and safe sanitation facilities and practices.
Strategic objectives to achieve including;
· Consolidation and coordination of national water quality monitoring programs
· Implementation and enforcement of water protection and conservation measures,
· Improved national plus enforcement and coordination mechanism in protecting water quality and quantity.
Currently water and sanitation unit is overseeing a number of on-going water and sanitation related projects activities that are funded and organized by various donor and agencies including.
- Water Scarcity Project, whose goal is to develop an asset management plan, improve the existing solar reticulation system, and maintain desalination plants in the outer islands.
- Wash from the Start, whose objective is to help in the Survey, Monitoring, and Creating Plans for the Repair and Rehabilitation of WASH Projects, Mostly in Health Care Facilities and Schools. Conduct promotion for WASH at the community level and among public health servants.
- South Tarawa Sanitation Project aims to Expand access to the 3Bs' (Bik. Bai. Bet) current sewage infrastructure and related machinery Increasing availability of fecal sludge management devices at on-site sanitation facilities. O&M activities for fecal sludge, communal/cluster toiles, salt-water systems, and sewerage.
- South Tarawa Water Supply Project, whose purposes is the construction of two desalination plants (Betio and Mckenzie), the ongoing procurement of a water supply network, and water management services. Water Awareness Program, Sanitation Pilot, and Water Reserve Management.
