The South Tarawa Water Supply Project (STWSP)

The project development objective is to increase access and quality of water supply services, and to improve the operational performance of the water supply services provider, in South Tarawa.

The US$60 million STWSP aims to provide the entire population of South Tarawa with a reliable, safe and climate resilient water supply. It will tentatively be co-financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the World Bank. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy (MISE) will act as project implementation agency.

To achieve its development objectives, the STWSP comprises:

A new 4,000 m3/day seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant (located at Temakin, West Betio) with energy requirements offset by a new solar photovoltaic (PV) array to be installed on the Bonriki water reserve;

New and rehabilitated water supply network infrastructure to reduce leakages and ensure that all South Tarawa residents have equitable access to safe and reliable drinking water services;

Institutional strengthening, capacity building and long-term performance-based contracts for operation of the new infrastructure;

An intensive 5-year climate change, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) awareness program with strong involvement of local civil society organizations; and,

The implementation of sanitation pilot systems in selected communities.

STWSP Project Status

MISE has engaged an engineering design consultant to undertake site surveys, hydrogeological investigations, concept / detailed designs, management of land and social safeguards issues, preparation of tender documentation and procurement assistance for the STWSP.  This work will commence in early 2019.

Procurement of major works packages and associated consulting services for delivery of the STWSP is expected to commence by mid-2019.
