Building and Maintenance Division
The Building and Maintenance Division (BMD) is one of the four divisions that make up the family of the Architectural and Building Engineering Division (ABED) working together under the MISE portfolio. The core function of the BMD focuses on executing construction and maintenance work in line with the national Building Code and with the support of the annual financial budget provided by government.
BMD consists of 6 out of 6 Trades which are Masonry, Plumbing, Carpentry, Joinery, Painting & Decoration, and Tile & Glazing Trade. Those are all cooperates with 5 technical management team and 8 supporting staff. This division has a demand on required electrician and store man to fully man our team strength.
BMD services include the following: -
1) Implementation and construction of new government owned buildings.
2) Maintenance of government buildings and fences.
3) Demolition of old government buildings
4) Renovation and extension work required for government assets.
5) Construction and maintenance of government furniture with other joinery work required.
6) Provide a maintenance work plan
7) Implement the building maintenance policy.
BMD staff do survey work annually for a maintenance plan of the following year. This allows ministries to identify their proposed priority maintenance work and allows BMD to match up costs for required maintenance work with the annual budget provision. BMD also accommodates additional maintenance requests that are made in writing to the Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy (MISE).
One of the challenges that BMD continues to face is the ongoing demand for the maintenance work for government tie houses which do not normally follow annual maintenance plans and are often not covered in the annual maintenance budget and to make matters complicated, BMD do not have the mandate over the maintenance fund as the fund is controlled by NEPO under the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development. BMD only provides NEPO with proposed annual maintenance work plan and costing to assist and address the need for the line ministries with their annual maintenance priorities.
However, the overall smooth operation and execution of BMD services depend on the efficiency of the ABED family so working collaboratively is very important for the quality and sustainable output of the BMD services.
