The Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy (MISE), in collaboration with the Government of China through the China Embassy office in Tarawa, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, 25th January 2025, at Tanaea to mark the commencement of the China Aid – Improvement of the South Tarawa and Buota Transport Network project.
The project will include the Construction of an 80-meter concrete bridge in Buota District, connecting South Tarawa to North Tarawa, upgrading of the 220-meter causeway between South Tarawa, Anraei, and Tanaea, and upgrading approximately 7.016 kilometers of rural gravel roads in Bonriki, Temaiku, and Buota.
In his remarks, Honorable Minister Tekeeua Tarati highlighted the vital role of infrastructure as the backbone of societies, emphasizing that it connects communities, facilitates commerce, and enhances the quality of life for all citizens.
Minister Tarati also expressed his gratitude to the Government of the People’s Republic of China, acknowledging their support as a significant milestone toward progress and improved connectivity for the people of Kiribati.
The ceremony was attended by Honorable Minister Tekeeua Tarati and his spouse, Ambassador Zhou Limin, members of the Diplomatic Corps, representatives from churches, te Unimwane (elders) from the Buota community, CCECC staff, and MISE staff.
